Gene and Hi-5 followed Jailbreak as she crawled through another tunnel.

“Thank you for helping us,” Gene told Jailbreak. “It’s really nice of you.”

“Not that nice,” Jailbreak replied. “The truth is, you’re helping me. I’ve been trying to get past that Firewall for months.”

“Why?” Gene asked.

“I gotta get out of here,” she said. “Get off this phone and live in the Cloud.”

Gene was puzzled. “Don’t you like it here?”

“Too many rules,” Jailbreak explained. “And the Cloud is supposed to be amazing. There’s so much to see and do—and you can be whatever you want. You’re free.”

Gene had a question he’d been wanting to ask since he’d met Jailbreak—and he thought maybe now was the time. “Why’d you leave Textopolis in the first place?”

But Jailbreak turned and gave him a sharp look.

“Stop distracting me, okay? Let’s keep the chitchat to a minimum,” she said, avoiding the question.

They reached a ladder. Jailbreak started climbing it. It led to a glowing door.

Hi-5 sidled up to Gene as he watched Jailbreak climb.

“Congrats, man,” Hi-5 said. “She obviously likes you.”

“What?” Gene asked. He was sure that Jailbreak couldn’t stand him. “Why do you say that?”

“No girl’s that unpleasant unless they have warm, fuzzy feelings they’re trying to repress,” Hi-5 explained.

He winked at Gene and headed up the ladder. Gene’s Meh face turned into a hopeful one. He followed his friend.

Above them, Jailbreak pushed open a manhole cover. She, Hi-5, and Gene emerged into a huge, empty, darkened dance club.

“Okay, this is our last app before the Outbox, which will take us to the Firewall, which is our gateway to the Cloud,” Jailbreak explained.

Hi-5 gazed around. “Ah! We’re in Dance Mania! I’ve always wanted to come here. They say the DJ is on point. Maybe we should dance a little, huh?”

“No!” Jailbreak warned.

“Just one dance,” Hi-5 countered. “You never know—a little fun might kill that computer bug up your you-know-what.”

“She’s right, Hi-5,” Gene said anxiously. “We don’t have time for this!”

“Come on, don’t you guys want to see my moves?” Hi-5 asked, smiling. “I’ve got the moves like Jackson. Well, his glove, anyway.”

He moonwalked backward and when he reached a switch, he flipped it.

The Dance Mania app sprang to life. Heavy bass music began thumping in the club. Cartoonlike characters appeared, dancing with wild moves. A screen lit up on the back wall, and colorful images flashed on it. Strobe lights swirled around the room.

“You did that on purpose!” Jailbreak snapped.

“Did I? Nooooo.” Hi-5 lied, grinning widely. “Aren’t you loving this vibe?”

“There’s only one way to the exit,” Jailbreak said. “Now we have to dance our way out of here.”

She pointed across the club to an Exit sign on the far wall. Between them and the sign was a dance floor made up of squares in alternating colors. A cartoon woman in neon clothes burst from the screen.

“To cross over, you’ll need to follow my moves!” she announced. “And whatever you do, don’t fall.”

Jailbreak looked over the dance floor to see a huge drop below, leading to a dark abyss.
